The biggest mistakes I made as a young writer (and how I fixed them)!

▪️ Getting overwhelmed 😩 I had HUGE ideas but once I was staring at a page, I didn’t know where to start. I couldn’t figure out how to translate the “vibe” I was going for into actual words. Eventually, I learned to only focus on the chapter in front of me. I now write one chapter at a time, from start to finish and then I push the plot from there. It helps me from getting ahead of myself.

▪️Editing as I write ✍🏻 I wanted my book to be PERFECT so I would edit and edit and edit until I lost sight of the story I was trying to tell. So I made a rule. ABSOLUTELY NO EDITING WHILE DRAFTING. Following that rule, I actually finished writing a novel for the very first time.

▪️Overwriting 👩🏻‍💻… Internal dialogue. Telling feelings. Exposition of lore. I have a tendency to be WORDY and while it sounds good in my head, it weighs books down. I fixed it by ruthlessly editing. (Although, I didn’t fix all of it in Dead Blood because they’re my books and I personally like a little fluff in my writing 😅)

▪️POV drift 👀 When I started writing, I’d accidentally slip into unintended POVs. Once, I switched from 1st to 3rd half way through. It was a nightmare to fix lol. Don’t do that. Now I know exactly whose head I’m in from the start. In Dead Blood, I’m 3rd omnipotent, I have a unique narrator voice, so all of them!

The biggest mistakes I made as a young writer (and how I fixed them)!

▪️ Getting overwhelmed 😩 I had HUGE ideas but once I was staring at a page, I didn’t know where to start. I couldn’t figure out how to translate the “vibe” I was going for into actual words. Eventually, I learned to only focus on the chapter in front of me. I now write one chapter at a time, from start to finish and then I push the plot from there. It helps me from getting ahead of myself.

▪️Editing as I write ✍🏻 I wanted my book to be PERFECT so I would edit and edit and edit until I lost sight of the story I was trying to tell. So I made a rule. ABSOLUTELY NO EDITING WHILE DRAFTING. Following that rule, I actually finished writing a novel for the very first time.

▪️Overwriting 👩🏻‍💻… Internal dialogue. Telling feelings. Exposition of lore. I have a tendency to be WORDY and while it sounds good in my head, it weighs books down. I fixed it by ruthlessly editing. (Although, I didn’t fix all of it in Dead Blood because they’re my books and I personally like a little fluff in my writing 😅)

▪️POV drift 👀 When I started writing, I’d accidentally slip into unintended POVs. Once, I switched from 1st to 3rd half way through. It was a nightmare to fix lol. Don’t do that. Now I know exactly whose head I’m in from the start. In Dead Blood, I’m 3rd omnipotent, I have a unique narrator voice, so all of them!

▪️Edit as you write!! My number one downfall. I COULD NOT finish a book no matter how determined I was until I figured this out. Write your full first draft. Never read through what you’ve written. Finish it. Then edit. It’s a game changer, trust me. 👩🏻‍💻

▪️Waste your creative energy on things other than writing. I’ll shout this until I’m blue in the face. Don’t talk about your book. Don’t post about your book. Literally, don’t even THINK about your book unless you’re actually writing. By the time you sit down to write you’ll be bursting with ideas and creativity. Tell the page, not everyone else. 🗣️

▪️Get lost in your world. Don’t spend so much time world building that you never create a story! It’s so easy to do. Building the world is arguably the most fun. But if you ever want anyone other than yourself to experience it, you have to actually write it down. 🦄

▪️Compare. Everyone is on a different writing journey. Some people take six weeks to finish a first draft. Others, decades. Most are somewhere in between. Some people plan their plot. Others wing it. I do a little of both. You can’t look over at what other people are doing or it’ll distract and you’ll never finish. Remain focused. Stay in your own lane. 👥

▪️Put down others to make yourself feel better. If you write smut, great! If you write Christian fiction, awesome! If you write cozy stories, cool! If you write dark romantasy, wonderful!! If you write thrillers or sci-fi or non fiction, you rock!! We are all in this together. Let’s lift each other up, and in doing so we will rise as well. ✨

My WIP is SO GOOD GUYS.

It’s about the enchanted, sentient maze that awakens Vanguard powers!! It’s a prequel series to DB, explaining why power was lost/forgotten. It’s amazing but I’m working on smoothing out some overwriting tendencies 🥲 my writing is “beautiful” but can be wordy lol.

But the story is solid. Lots of death, fast pacing, focus on the most powerful matriarchal bloodline and romance!! Soon I will be ready to query.

The good news is, as I was editing last night
a scene made me cry! I forgot that I wrote it, it was so poingent!!! My poor characters 😅

But yeah I can’t do the posting thing while I’m in this mindset. So enjoy this video from my dream wedding. Our first dance to “Where is my Mind?” Our band said it was by far the coolest first dance song they’d ever played. It snowed unexpectedly like out of a fairy tale. The whole day really was a dream.

They say write what you know. But they don’t mean only write about Maine if you’re from Maine 😂 (although you can if you want to!)

Write the *feelings* you know. Write about what hurts you. Your grief, guilt, longing, love and fear. That’s what makes a story real.

I’ll expose myself to make my point lol. My books have a heavy focus on familial relationships. Mother daughter. Father son. Generational expectations vs cultural evolution. My MC Rose struggles with the juxtaposition of what’s expected of her and what she feels inside, like me! My MC Sybil weaponizes her charm and beauty to get whatever she wants and to mask her true nature, like I do 😏 Sybil is a psychopath and I’m painfully introverted, but our mechanism to hide is the same!

“Write what you know” means spilling parts of yourself onto the page. Good writing isn’t just cool magic systems and “slow burn”. It means baring your soul through your narrative so that your readers feel it too.
